Short definition

A zero-click search is one where the user gets the information they need directly from the results page, via a snippet, knowledge panel, AI summary or AI assistant, and ends the search without clicking through to any website.

For questions like the weather, exchange rates or a company’s phone number, people have long got their answer without visiting a site. AI Overviews and chat assistants have extended that to much more complex questions. Someone asking “what is an employer liable for after a workplace accident?” can now read a few paragraphs of answer and stop there.

Why it matters

For years, a page’s value was judged by the visits it brought in. In a zero-click search, your page may have informed the user, but no visit shows up in your analytics. Two things follow:

  • A drop in traffic doesn’t always mean a drop in visibility. The information may be consumed on another screen.
  • Measuring visibility needs signals beyond visits: being cited as a source in the answer (citation rate) or having your brand named.

Studies on the share of zero-click searches reach quite different conclusions, and the numbers vary a lot with methodology. It’s best not to make decisions based on any single figure.

Example

A dental clinic publishes a good page on “when can I eat after an implant?”. Google’s AI Overview cites it, but most people read the overview and leave. Visits are low, yet the clinic’s name was in front of the person asking. The real payoff comes if they remember that name when they’re ready to book.
